What this Independent Voter Wants

August 24, 2008 · 2 Comments

Which candidate can provide what an independent voter wants? While I don’t speak for any other independent voter, I can speak to my own wants for my country.

I want to be safe from my own government’s intrusion into my emails, telephone calls, financial affairs, and other elements of my privacy.

I want to be secure in my possessions knowing that no one can ’sneak and peak’ in my house without probable cause.

I want National Security Letters to be illegal.

I want the Department of Homeland Security to be reduced in scope and law enforcement actions not related to legal and illegal entry removed from their purview.

I want action to restore habeas corpus for any person apprehended on American-controlled territory unless they are designated prisoners-of-war. This includes embassies, military bases, rented or ceded land to the American government, and foreign land under military jurisdiction.

I want prisoners-of-war to be foreign individuals that are  defined by their attacks, plans, intents, and commission of acts against the United States regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, or religion.

I want charges brought against any detainee under US control, anywhere they are held or detained, within 30 days of the start of their control by US officials. I accept that prisoners captured on a battlefield will undergo a military tribunal to ascertain their threat. Once identified as prisoner-of-war, criminal, or designated as no threat then all international treaties signed by the US government are in force.

I want military personnel to guard government personnel. No security contractors.

I want rendition to be a covert operation and not a routine matter as it is today.

I want a constitutional amendment on privacy.

I want the borders controlled from intrusion by smugglers, refugees, and illegal entrants.

I want to wear my shoes the whole time I am in the airport.

I want my country safe from its own government again.

I want a review of President Bush’s instructions and decisions, secret and otherwise, by a joint legislative and judicial committee with public disclosure of unconstitutional and illegal decisions issued (or applied).

I want a balanced budget.

I want a reduction in national debt.

I want corporate welfare reduced 25% in 4 years.

I want foreign aid reduced 25% in 4 years.

I want an Alternative Minimum Tax applied to corporations. Let the Board of Directors reduce CEO salaries to pay for it.

I want an independent judicial oversight body created to handle ethics violations in Congress.

I want 3 Senators per state, one which is appointed by the State , and two elected as they are now.

There are more ‘wants’, but I think this is enough for the next four years.
